Climbed this from the small car park to the North-West of the dam - route is suggested by Cameron McNeish. From the small car park, ascended SW onto the west ridge (Creag Nam Botham), and headed south round in a U shape over Meall Garbh, Meall Nan Tarmachan, and north along the ridge back to car park. Really good day, some pretty good scrambling on approach to Meall Garbh

High level start of around 500m where there is a small car park that can take 4 cars if parked with consideration.Broke across very wet ground on to steep grassy slopes and headed for the SE top. There is a 2 layer fence that you can follow up thes slopes but remember one of them is electrified! Soon the main SE top comes in to view where you need to take a turn to the right and down in to yet more boggy ground.A very strong snow storm came down on us at this point but battoned down the hatches and up the very steep grassy slope with an intermitent path.Soon back to nice weather and the final push to the ice cover summit of Meall nan Tarmachan 1043m so only a mere 643m or so to the top.Down over no less than 4 Munro tops with the occasional bit of mild scrambling with the weather doing its best at times to blow us off the ridge!Back to cat with time and energy to spare so crossed over another wattery bog towards Meall a Choire Leith.

We parked at the visitor centre and walked up to the start of this walk, we should have parked just off the bridge as there is room for quite a few cars. There is also room when you cross the bridge for about 5-6 cars

As this was part of a longer mulit-day linear walk, I climbed Tarmachan direct from Killin village and descended into Glenlyon. From the village, I took the road to the bottom of the pipeline. The pipeline has an old railway running beside it! At the top, you can join the tracks which have come in from the Ben Lawers car park. I took the S ridge of Meall Garbh which is straightforward but in retrospect I wish I had joined the ridge further round and enjoyed the scrambling. Northwards, there are alternatives in the dip, but then a new fence is a clear guide nearly all the way to the road.

Climbed this East to West as described on this site, a great day for it. I had already been up Beinn nan Oighreagh & Meall Ghaordaidh in the morning, so with you already being halfway up when you park, made this an ideal afternoon choice. Weather was fantastic, views amazing, wee bit hazy, but not too bad. Easy ridge walk, only one wee tricky bit coming off Meall Garbh, but this can be avoided if your not confident.

I revisited this on 10/04/2010 hoping to walk the whole ridge this time but my day was cut short at the Meall Garbh descent. I don't know why - perhaps because I was on my own & my pack was heavy with winter gear & the rocks were slippy with melt water - but it completely spooked me & I decided to turn back. Unfortunately, I'd already thrown my walking sticks down the tricky bit thinking I could follow. I'm grateful to the 2 guys I met back at the summit who took my number, made it down the crags and eventually reunited me with my Lekis. I must be getting soft...

Great little route... a good 5 hour blast or there abouts. If you are looking to just climb The Munro then great, but well worth completing the whole ridge.. Perfect route for days short on sunshine.....The walk back is a good hour so complete the route in reverse.. well worth coming off the Munro and having the car not to far off!

I climbed Meall nan Tarmachan with my collies Ollie & Tino on the 31st January 2010. The route up to the top is straightforward and I would highly recommend it for a winter’s day. The panoramic views were stunning. The ridge had some quite heavy cornices so we just headed straight up, bagged the Munro and came straight back down since cornices and dogs don’t really mix!

Climbed today with Sandra, Ryan and Tia the dog. Started of being able to see the top from the car park then after an hour or so we were decended in low cloud. No rain thankfully but when reaching the top we hung about desperate to get a view. Managed to get a glimpse of the Tarmagan Ridge, but Ben Lawers top was kept hidden. It finally cleared a bit on the way down but overall a good day with no rain.

July 05 2009. 3 summits today: Tarmachan, Choire Leith and Corrannaich. 7 hours. Began in small car park quarter of a mile S of Lochan Lairige. Headed half mile S to start of track, following path all the way to first summit (923). Short steep climb to top. Headed NE then NNW down ridge to cairn top of Lochan Lairige. NE (very boggy) to top of Leith ,then S to Corranaich, then down SE back to Lochan road and car. Lovely day, fantastic views and an easy three Munro's to bag without too much stress. (scramble must be on the other side?)

Climbed on 13/10/08 with Linda. Set off from the lay-by just after 10am, taking it really easy in the wind and rain. Conditions seemed to improve just below the summit, but with poor visibility we opted not to take in any further peaks. On our descent the clouds departed and finally gave us some views. A fine hill.

Navigation no problem in good conditions. Path to summit and along Tarmachan ridge. Beautiful walk

Take care on the scramble west of Meall Garbh in wet conditions. This is a great walk!

Climbed as part of a traverse of the Tarmachan Ridge encompassing this, Meall Garbh, Beinn nan Eachan and Creag na Callich. A wet, cloudy afternoon with poor visibility that lasted until the descent from the way-too-much-fun knife-edge just beyond Meall Garbh. On the last two peaks the weather improved and we were treated to wondrous cloudscapes and views over to the Crianlarich hills, Ben Vorlich and Stuc a' Chroin by Loch Earn, and various imposing hulks to the north. A compelling, utterly wonderous walk that never ceased to intrigue and entertain. Five stars.

What can I say about this munro, I'm sure the veiws are fantastic but I cant really say as my climb was very misty. I would recommend this climb to anyone looking for an interesting walk. The quartz was lovely and there were some good pieces of slate. I did not manage the ridge as it was raining and the temperature was dropping. This was my second munro and i engoyed it more than my first, Buachaille Etive Mor.

This was my favourite walk I have done and also for me it was my longest yet and all my family agree it was a great day out and to add to our happiness we did two more munros for our list. I think outhers should try this walk but do not go on a very hot day.

Walked, climbed, scrambled the tarmachan ridge with my daughter heather and the london branch of the clan Ed, Majka and Madelaine. Suberb day and the leeches that attached themselves to our feet as we cooled of in the small lochan just before meall nan tarmachan didnt spoil the enjoyment.Great views and even better pictures.

A fine walk indeed, but a long one in March snow showers. Climbed on the 27th March with Jimmy and Yvonne. Got up very quick and then went for the ridge walk. Made good time but missed our exit off the motorway and added a couple of KM onto the circuit. Highly recommend this and we will be going back in June for the views. Beware to all those who are scared of heights. Just before you come down there is a ledge of about a foot wide and a good 1000 foot drop if you miss the ledge. Grab hold of the rocks and don't look down. Superb Munro thrill. Great day out.

A fine walk, Summer or Winter. A great intro to ridge walking in pleasant surroundings. Straightforward in Summer and makes a good sporting day out in Winter. If you want to avoid the steep section into Garbh leave the path 30 metres before the drop and descend the steep grassy slope on your right hand side to reach the col.

Do not take the first small path going through the Heather, the main path is a few metres further on. Be aware that in icy conditions the descent from Meall Garbh to the next col is tricky if the small rocky section is iced over.
